Back Where It Began: Coulter Fussell Brings ‘Proving Ground’ Home to Columbus

Before Coulter Fussell knew what a career in the arts might require, she knew what it felt like to stand in front of a work of art and imagine becoming an artist herself. She learned that feeling at The Columbus Museum.

Fussell grew up in Columbus, where her father served as a curator at the museum during her childhood. Its permanent collection became part of the landscape of her early life. She remembers running through the galleries, encountering works by artists like Bo Bartlett and Roger Brown, and gradually beginning to understand that making art could become a life.

Decades later, those works still feel familiar.
