Stitching Mississippi Stories

Coulter Fussell, a diner waitress turned artist, makes her kids’ Snapchat messages into art.

In a storefront studio on the main street of her small town of Water Valley, Mississippi, Fussell turns donated fabric, photographs from her father, and her kids’ videos of fireworks, lake jumps and pick-up truck hijinks into complex textile works of art. Her creations illuminate the optimism, humor and technique instilled in her by her mother, a quiltmaker. As Coulter says, “I grew up in a household where what people would consider higher arts was on the same playing field as craft work.”

Journey to the deep South as we follow Coulter’s advice to take the “art world to the artists.”
