This permanent collection-based exhibition spotlights over 150 years of American artists with ties to Maine. The state’s varied topography and picturesque views have long enthused artists seeking new subject matter or escape from humdrum city life.

As the 20th century unfolded, an ever-increasing number of artists discovered the region. They especially appreciated its undeveloped countryside, rustic living conditions, cool summer temperatures, and relative seclusion. VACATIONLAND features work by artists with deep roots in Maine, like Winslow Homer, Margaret Zorach, and Marsden Hartley. It also highlights important artist colonies, such as Ogunquit and Skowhegan. The inclusion of works by 21st-century artists corroborates Maine’s enduring allure and inspiration
