The 2026 Joan Mitchell Fellows have just been announced, and we’re thrilled to see Coulter Fussell among this year’s 15 recipients—alongside an exciting group of artists with ties to the Southeast.

For us, Coulter’s recognition is especially exciting because she’s coming home to COMU in just ONE MONTH.

Opening September 12, Coulter Fussell: The Proving Ground brings her inventive quilted and mixed-media works to the Museum. Working with discarded and donated textiles, Coulter transforms familiar materials into works that explore memory, place, craft, and the Southern landscape.

Coulter grew up right here in Columbus, and we’re so proud to celebrate this incredible recognition while getting ready to welcome her home. Congratulations, Coulter—and congratulations to all of this year’s Joan Mitchell Fellows!

We can’t wait to see The Proving Ground at COMU. ❤️ Opening September 12.

Celebrate her homecoming with us from 3–7 PM on September 12 with live music, food trucks, art-making activities, and talks from Coulter herself.
