Columbus Museum highlights new Calvin Smyre exhibition, “Puzzle of Politics”

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The Columbus Museum shines light on a new exhibition in honor of former State Representative of 50 years, Calvin Smyre.

To celebrate the legacy of Smyre’s political life and a personal hobby that meant so much to him, the museum held an exhibition ceremony, which included Smyre himself speaking at the event.

Retired state Rep. Calvin Smyre’s 50 years of service in the Georgia Legislature and the local community is featured in a new exhibition at the Columbus Museum until March 1. The exhibition, entitled ‘The Puzzle of Politics: Calvin Smyre in Service, 1975-2025,’ features photographs, documents, personal reflections and artifacts that explore Smyre’s decades of service and his role in consequential Georgia legislation.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – The Columbus Museum is honoring Georgia’s longest-serving state legislator, the Honorable Calvin Smyre.

It’s all a part of their latest exhibit open now through March 1, called The Puzzle of Politics: Calvin Smyre in Service, 1975-2025.

According to the museum, visitors will take a history lesson through time with the showcase highlighting Smyre’s impact on landmark legislation throughout the state as well as his local contributions to the Columbus community.

The Columbus Museum has opened a new exhibition chronicling five decades of public service by one of Georgia’s longest-serving lawmakers.

The Puzzle of Politics: Calvin Smyre in Service, 1975–2025 examines the 50-year career of the Honorable Calvin Smyre, who first took office in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1975 and went on to become one of the most influential figures in state government.

The Columbus Museum has opened a new exhibition spotlighting the five-decade public service career of Calvin Smyre, one of Georgia’s most influential and enduring state lawmakers.

Titled “The Puzzle of Politics: Calvin Smyre in Service, 1975–2025,” the exhibition traces Smyre’s career from his first election to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1975 through 50 years of legislative leadership. Known for his bipartisan respect and effectiveness, Smyre played key roles in several landmark measures, including the legislation establishing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday as a state holiday, replacing Georgia’s 1950s-era state flag, authorizing construction of the Georgia Dome, and passing the state’s hate crimes law.
