Jonathan Frederick Walz, an expert on American art, transatlantic modernism, and contemporary art. He earned his MA and a PhD from the Department of Art History & Archaeology at the University of Maryland, College Park. As a leading authority on the American artists Charles Demuth and Alma W. Thomas, he has authored multiple articles on each painter. As a proponent of object-based study and public history, Walz has over 25 years of experience in art museums, including more than a decade of service at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. In 2016 he was appointed the Director of Curatorial Affairs and Curator of American Art at The Columbus Museum (COMU) in Georgia. Walz has organized or co-organized numerous curatorial projects, including the award-winning nationally traveling exhibition Alma W. Thomas: Everything Is Beautiful (2021–22) as well as the complete reimagination and reinstallation of COMU's permanent collection (2024). He lives in North Columbus with his cats, Winckelmann and Wölfflin.
