During World War II, the purchase of war bonds financed much of the U.S. military’s operations. Communities held numerous war bond rallies with entertainment and special guests to encourage residents to purchase bonds. Muscogee County’s sixth war bond rally featured an appearance by Hollywood star Bette Davis. The Ledger reported that the evening’s “Fort Benning Army Show” would feature “the first large-scale display of the Army’s latest weapons and equipment,” including an assault staged by paratroopers with flamethrowers; demonstrations and displays by the Infantry and Parachute schools; homing pigeons used by the Signal Corps; and the bands of the Parachute School and the 334th Army Service Force. Price of admission to the rally, held on November 30 at Columbus’ Memorial Stadium, was the purchase of a war bond.

“CWT” on the ticket refers to Central War Time, an early version of daylight savings time first used during World War I. In February 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt enacted “war time” throughout the country, which moved clocks forward one hour until the end of the war to conserve energy and boost industrial production. In January 1943, Georgia Governor Ellis Arnall and the state legislature passed a bill to put the state on Central War Time rather than Eastern, therefore returning Georgia to its original clock. However, much of the eastern half of the state chose to remain on Eastern War Time. After much debate, Columbus decided to go to CWT, even though Fort Benning remained on EWT.

Despite bitter cold, approximately 10,000 people attended the rally and purchased $2.26 million worth of bonds. As a surprise, Davis offered 11x14 autographed photos of herself for each person who bought a $100 bond that evening; three hundred were purchased.

Today is the day for `Columbus At Play!`

Play was widely accepted as a key part of childhood by the late 19th century. Adults understood that children needed time to move around and develop social skills between periods of study and learning. Today, play is recognized as not just serious fun for children but a basic human need at all ages. This exhibition explores how Chattahoochee Valley residents have enjoyed games and recreation over the past 200 years.

Come explore how Columbus like to play!
